A practical VPN and device checklist for travel

Update before you leave

Install operating-system and browser updates on a trusted network before travel. Confirm that your VPN app opens, connects, and can reconnect after a restart. If you use a direct APK, keep the official download address and verification fingerprint available.

Also review account recovery. A lost phone is much harder to handle if your only recovery method is a SIM you no longer control. Passkeys, backup codes, and a second trusted recovery method address account risk that a VPN does not.

Treat public networks as untrusted infrastructure

At an airport or hotel, confirm the network name with staff when possible. A familiar-looking SSID can be copied by someone nearby. Expect captive portals, and avoid installing certificates or configuration profiles merely because a login page asks you to.

HTTPS remains important even when a VPN is active. Pay attention to browser warnings and the domain shown on sign-in pages. A VPN protects part of the route; it does not decide whether a website is genuine.

Know what might stop working

Some networks block or interfere with VPN protocols, and some online services react to unfamiliar IP addresses. Banking, streaming, workplace systems, and account-security tools can ask for extra verification. That is not necessarily a VPN failure.

Keep a fallback plan that does not require disabling every security control at once. Mobile data may be a better temporary route for a sensitive task than repeatedly changing unknown network settings.

Do a short check when you arrive

After connecting, verify that the VPN shows an active state, normal HTTPS sites load, and the public IP address reflects the route you expected. If something fails, record whether the problem affects all internet access, only the VPN, or only one application. That classification makes troubleshooting much faster.
