Public Wi-Fi and VPNs: five myths worth dropping

Public Wi-Fi deserves caution, but the risks are easier to manage when you separate modern HTTPS protections from VPN routing.

Myth: everyone on Wi-Fi can read every website

Most mainstream websites use HTTPS, which encrypts browser traffic between you and the site. Shared Wi-Fi does not automatically reveal the contents of every HTTPS page. Browser certificate warnings still matter, and unencrypted protocols remain a concern.

Myth: a VPN makes a malicious hotspot safe

A VPN can protect traffic between your device and VPN endpoint, but it cannot make a fake login page legitimate, remove malware from a device, or stop you from giving credentials to the wrong site. Network protection and phishing protection are different jobs.

Myth: the network name proves who operates it

Attackers can copy familiar SSIDs. Ask staff for the correct network name when practical and be cautious with unexpected captive portals. Disable automatic joining for networks you do not need.

Myth: you can ignore device hygiene with a VPN

Updates, screen lock, account MFA or passkeys, and careful downloads remain important. A VPN is useful on untrusted networks, but the strongest practical setup combines transport protection with ordinary device and account security.
